How can I convert my STL file to PLY?

How long does it take to convert my STL to PLY?

Most STL to PLY conversions complete in a few seconds for typical furniture-model files (a few MB to ~100 MB). The pipeline runs in your browser for most format pairs — no upload to a server, no roundtrip latency. For SKP and BLEND outputs the conversion runs server-side via the native Blender or SketchUp engine, with a hard 5-minute timeout per conversion; most server-side conversions finish in well under a minute.

What does the STL to PLY conversion preserve?

Materials, UV maps, vertex normals, and scene hierarchy are preserved wherever the PLY format supports them. STL is the exception — it is a geometry-only format by design and discards materials and UVs. GLB and GLTF preserve embedded textures inside the file; OBJ produces an accompanying MTL material descriptor; SKP groups components logically with materials applied; BLEND preserves the full Blender scene graph with modifiers.

How does converting STL to PLY work?

In order to successfully convert a STL formatted file to the PLY format, our converter tools will perform several initial checks to ensure the file provided is indeed a STL file. There are many files out there where the file type extension does not match the data contained within the file. Along with these file type checks, our tools will do additional checks to ensure the file is correctly formatted to match the provided file type.
